Shrimp

Freshwater shrimp are small invertebrates kept for their colour and their steady grazing on algae and leftover food. Neocaridina types are the usual starting point, with caridina and larger filter-feeding species appearing from time to time.

Keeping shrimp well

Stability matters most: consistent parameters, no copper-based medications, mature filtration and plenty of surfaces to graze. Moss, leaf litter and fine-leaved plants give cover, which counts for a lot with newly moulted shrimp.

They are peaceful and easy to house with small, calm fish, but anything large enough to eat them eventually will. Plenty of keepers run shrimp-only tanks for that reason.
