The bamboo or wood shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) is a large Southeast Asian filter feeder, and it works quite differently from cherry or amano shrimp. Instead of picking at surfaces it perches on wood or rock facing into the current and unfolds four fan-shaped appendages to strain food particles from the water, folding them into its mouth every few seconds. The body is a warm tan to red-brown with a pale stripe down the back, and it changes tone as the shrimp settles in.

Aquarium care

  • Much larger than a dwarf shrimp.
  • Entirely peaceful and harmless to fish and plants.
  • Needs real water movement. Without current it cannot feed properly.
  • Wants a raised perch, wood or rock, in the flow.
  • Feeds on suspended particles. Powdered foods, crushed flake and infusoria dosed into the current are needed in a very clean tank.
  • If it is picking at the substrate, it is not getting enough food from the water.

Good in a mature planted or river-style tank with peaceful fish. Anything large enough to threaten a shrimp of this size is best avoided, as is a tank with no flow.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current shrimp list.
