Orange dwarf shrimp are a colour line of Neocaridina davidi, a species you will also see listed under the older names heteropoda and denticulata. Trade names for orange lines vary from supplier to supplier, so it is worth judging what is actually in the tank rather than the label on the bag. What does not vary is the animal underneath: a small, tough, endlessly busy grazer that suits a planted tank very well.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach around 3 cm.
- Comfortable across a wide temperature range, and often kept without a heater in a warm room.
- Peaceful, and it will not damage plants.
- Grazes biofilm and soft algae; supplement with shrimp food and blanched vegetables.
- Needs moderately hard water with enough calcium for clean moulting.
- Copper-based medications and some fertilisers are fatal to dwarf shrimp.
They suit mature planted tanks with small peaceful fish, and dedicated shrimp tanks best of all. Give shrimplets cover in the form of moss, leaf litter or a shrimp shelter. Avoid keeping them with cichlids, gouramis, loaches, larger barbs or any fish with a mouth big enough for an adult shrimp.
