Driftwood

The driftwood on this page is Fluval mopani wood, a dense hardwood with a distinctive two-tone grain, stocked in small, medium and large pieces. Because it is natural wood, no two pieces share the same shape.

What to expect

Fresh mopani floats until it takes on water, so it needs soaking or weighting down before it will stay where you put it, and how long that takes depends entirely on the size and density of the piece. It also releases tannins, which tint the water a tea colour. Many keepers want that soft blackwater look; if you do not, repeated water changes and activated carbon will reduce it over time.

Driftwood is usually bought with substrate, plants and carbon.
