The skunk cleaner shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) is a scarlet Indo-Pacific shrimp with a white stripe down the back, white-tipped legs and long white antennae it waves to advertise its services. Given time it sets up a cleaning station on a ledge and picks parasites and dead tissue from fish that come to it — including, quite often, the keeper's hand. It is one of the most engaging invertebrates in the marine hobby.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 5 to 6 cm.
  • Peaceful, and safe with corals and other ornamental invertebrates.
  • Needs mature, stable water; it is very sensitive to copper-based medication and to swings in salinity.
  • Drip acclimate slowly, over at least an hour, when introducing it.
  • Moults periodically — the empty shell left behind is normal and not a dead shrimp.
  • Eats what it cleans from fish, plus frozen and prepared foods offered to the tank.

They suit reef and fish-only tanks stocked with peaceful to moderately robust fish. Do not keep them with hawkfish, larger wrasses, triggerfish, lionfish or anything else that treats a shrimp as food. A single shrimp or a bonded pair works best.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. More in the saltwater collection.
