Ricefish

Ricefish, often sold as medaka, are small Asian egg-layers traditionally kept in outdoor containers in Japan. Several colour forms exist, and they are hardier than their delicate appearance suggests.

Keeping ricefish

They tolerate a broad temperature range and do well in gently filtered, well-planted tanks and tubs. Floating plants give them cover and spawning sites, and they are more comfortable in a group than alone.

Temperament is peaceful, though their small size means they should not be housed with fish large enough to eat them. They suit nano tanks, quiet communities and anyone interested in breeding, as they spawn readily.
