Swordtail

Swordtails are livebearers from Central America, named for the extended lower tail lobe the males carry. They are larger and more athletic than platies, with red, green, black and pineapple forms commonly seen.

Care

They want a tank with length to swim, gentle to moderate flow and neutral to hard water. A lid is sensible, as they are capable jumpers when startled.

Temperament is generally peaceful, but males will chase one another, so keep either a single male or enough room for several. Females give birth to live young, and a mixed group produces fry regularly.

They suit community tanks of medium-sized peaceful fish and keepers who like a bit of activity to watch.

Current stock is listed here and changes as new fish arrive. Livestock is sold for local pickup in Lethbridge.
