Central American Cichlids

Central American cichlids are the sturdy, characterful fish of rivers and lakes from Mexico down to Panama: convicts, firemouths, jack dempseys and their relatives. Most are bigger and bolder than their South American cousins.

What they need

Space comes first, meaning a long tank with strong filtration, rockwork bedded down securely and a substrate they can dig in, because most of them rearrange things to suit themselves. Neutral to hard water generally suits the group.

They are territorial, especially once paired up, and belong in a species tank or with fish able to hold their own rather than in a quiet planted community.

Stock changes as new fish arrive and this page shows what we have. Livestock is sold for local pickup in Lethbridge.
