Blue Sakura shrimp are a colour form of Neocaridina davidi, the dwarf shrimp species behind almost every solid-coloured shrimp in the freshwater hobby. Sakura describes the grade rather than a separate animal: the blue is deeper and covers more of the body than in lower grades, though some variation between individuals in a batch is normal and honest. They spend the day picking over plants, wood and substrate, and a settled colony is constant quiet activity in a planted tank.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 2.5 to 3 cm.
  • Peaceful and no threat to healthy plants.
  • Grazes biofilm, soft algae and leftovers; supplement with a shrimp food and blanched vegetables.
  • Needs moderately hard water with enough calcium and minerals to moult properly.
  • Copper is dangerous to dwarf shrimp โ€” check any medication or plant fertiliser before dosing.
  • Breeds in fresh water with no special setup, so a stable group tends to become a colony.

They suit planted nano and community tanks with small, calm fish such as chili rasboras, ember tetras and otocinclus. Almost any fish will eat shrimplets, so a shrimp-only tank or one with dense moss gives young the best chance. Keep them away from cichlids, larger barbs and anything with a big mouth.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rest of the shrimp collection.
