Tanganyikan
Lake Tanganyika sits in Africa's Rift Valley, and the cichlids that come from it form a distinct group with their own habits. What arrives here varies, though it usually covers a few of the familiar lines: frontosa, which grow large and slowly and hold themselves in open water; brichardi, a smaller rock dweller that lives in extended family colonies; and Tropheus, a stocky grazer that does best in a crowded single-species group.
All of them want the same thing from the water, which is hard, alkaline and stable. Build the tank around stacked rock with clear swimming lanes, keep filtration ahead of the load, and choose tank mates from the same lake rather than mixing lakes.
This group suits a keeper who wants one considered display rather than a mixed community. Stock rotates as shipments land, so what is listed is what is in the tanks. Livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store.
Other rift lake fish are grouped in Assorted African Cichlids.
