Breeding boxes and traps give fry, pregnant livebearers or a nipped fish a protected space inside the main tank, so they stay in the same water without the shock of a separate setup.
Which style
Hang-on boxes sit outside the rim and draw water from the tank, which keeps them clean but needs rim clearance and often an air line. Floating boxes and net breeders sit inside and take up tank space instead, though they suit aquariums with no free rim. Size is the other variable, as a trap that is too small stresses an adult livebearer badly.
Breeders are usually bought with an air pump for the hang-on models, plus fine-grade fry food.
