Red sushi shrimp are the classic red line of Neocaridina davidi — the shrimp most people picture when they hear the words dwarf shrimp. Colour runs from a translucent orange-red through to a solid opaque red depending on the individual and its grade. Red holds up better than most morphs against a planted background, which is a large part of why these have stayed the most popular freshwater shrimp for years.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 2.5 to 3 cm.
  • Peaceful, and no threat to plants of any kind.
  • Grazes biofilm and soft algae continuously; supplement with shrimp food and blanched vegetables.
  • Wants moderately hard, mineral-rich water and, above all, stability.
  • Copper-based medications and some plant fertilisers will kill them.
  • Breeds readily. A settled group of ten or more usually turns into a colony within a few months.

They suit planted community tanks with small, peaceful fish, and dedicated shrimp tanks best of all. Provide moss, leaf litter or a shrimp shelter so shrimplets have somewhere to hide from tankmates. Cichlids, gouramis, loaches and larger barbs are not appropriate company.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the shrimp collection.
