Guppy

Guppies are small, hardy livebearers from northern South America and among the most widely kept aquarium fish anywhere. Males carry the colour and the long fins; females grow larger and are plainer.

What they need

  • A stable, well-filtered tank with gentle flow
  • Moderately hard water rather than very soft water
  • Company, since they settle better in numbers than alone

They are active, peaceful and easy to feed, which makes them a sensible first fish and a long-term favourite in community tanks. Mixed groups breed freely, so plan for fry or keep males only.
