Shrimp-safe medications — and what will kill your shrimp

Short answer: the single biggest killer of shrimp, snails and other invertebrates is copper, and copper hides in a great many common treatments — including a lot of ich, velvet and general parasite medications. A dose that is perfectly safe for fish can wipe out an invertebrate tank. So the rule is simple: never add any medication to a tank with shrimp until you have read the label and confirmed it is safe for invertebrates. If the label does not clearly say so, do not use it in that tank. When in doubt, move the sick fish to a separate hospital tank, or ask us first.

Why copper is the problem

Copper is toxic to invertebrates at concentrations far below what it takes to bother a fish. Shrimp, snails, crayfish and other inverts simply do not tolerate it. Many parasite treatments use copper precisely because it works so well on fish parasites, which is exactly what makes them dangerous around shrimp.

Worse, copper lingers. It can bind into decorations, substrate and silicone and slowly leach back out for a long time afterward. A tank that has ever been treated with copper is not a safe home for shrimp without serious remediation — and even then, be cautious.

Read the label — it is the authority, not us

Formulations change, and two products with similar names can contain very different active ingredients. So the label on the bottle in your hand always outranks any general advice, including this guide. Before you dose a tank that holds any invertebrate:

  • Read the active ingredients. Treat anything containing copper as unsafe for inverts.
  • Look for a clear statement that the product is safe for shrimp, snails or invertebrates. If it is not there, assume it is not safe.
  • Be cautious with parasite treatments in general — ich and velvet medications are the most common culprits, and some also contain ingredients like malachite green that can stress invertebrates and scaleless fish.
  • Remember that ordinary aquarium salt at treatment strength stresses many freshwater shrimp too. It is not a free pass.

If you cannot confirm from the label that a treatment is invertebrate-safe, the safe answer is not to use it in that tank. We would genuinely rather you called us than guessed.

Treat the fish without losing the shrimp

The most reliable way to medicate safely is to keep the medication away from the invertebrates in the first place:

  • Use a separate hospital tank. Move the affected fish, treat them there, and leave your display tank — and its shrimp — untouched. A simple sponge filter and heater are enough. See choosing a filter for why a sponge filter is ideal here.
  • Never dose "just in case." Medications are not preventatives. Only treat a diagnosed problem, in a tank without inverts.
  • If copper has already entered a tank, a copper-removing resin such as Seachem CupriSorb can pull it back out of the water, and a copper test kit lets you confirm the level is actually falling. Do not trust a tank as "safe again" on faith alone.
