Blue sushi shrimp are a blue line of Neocaridina davidi, the hardy dwarf shrimp that made shrimp keeping accessible to people without specialist water. Colour ranges from a soft steel blue to something much deeper, and it shows best against dark substrate and green plants. Individually they are easy to overlook; the point of them is the colony, and a group working across a wall of moss reads as movement across the whole tank.

Aquarium care

  • Adults stay under about 3 cm.
  • Peaceful, and they will not damage plants.
  • Start with at least ten. Small numbers are slow to settle and slow to breed.
  • Feeds on biofilm and soft algae, topped up with a good shrimp food and blanched vegetables.
  • Wants stable, moderately hard water; sudden changes in parameters cause more losses than anything else.
  • Copper in any form, including some medications and fertilisers, will kill them.

Good company includes chili rasboras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras and other small peaceful fish, though all of them will take shrimplets given the chance. Provide moss and leaf litter for the young. Avoid cichlids, gouramis, loaches and larger barbs entirely.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the shrimp collection.
