Deep Blue Shrimp

The deep blue shrimp is another selectively bred line of Neocaridina davidi, worked towards a dark, saturated blue rather than the red of a cherry shrimp. Colour intensity varies between individuals and shifts with mood, diet and substrate, so a group nearly always shows a range from steel to near-black rather than one uniform shade. Care is identical to any other Neocaridina, which makes it an easy way to add an unusual colour to a small planted tank.

Aquarium care

• Adults reach roughly 3 cm.
• Peaceful and harmless to tankmates.
• Best kept as a group of ten or more.
• Omnivorous grazer: biofilm, soft algae, blanched vegetables, sinking shrimp food.
• Breeds in fresh water without help, given cover for the young.
• Dark substrate and good planting bring out the strongest colour.
• Avoid copper-based medications.

Keep a blue line on its own if you want it to stay blue: different Neocaridina colour forms interbreed freely and the offspring revert towards wild brown within a few generations. A species tank, or a planted tank with only very small peaceful fish, is the way to go.
