Crystalwort Riccia (Riccia fluitans)
Riccia fluitans, sold in the hobby as crystalwort, is a liverwort rather than a true plant. It has no roots at all, and it will drift in a loose mat unless you tie it down.
Growing Riccia fluitans
- Habit: floating liverwort, commonly tied or netted onto a flat stone or piece of wood to form a low carpet.
- Lighting: it wants good light. Under bright light it pearls readily and gives off visible strings of oxygen bubbles.
- CO2: added CO2 helps it stay compact and grow quickly.
- Placement: foreground carpet when tied down, or left floating as cover near the surface.
- Difficulty: moderate. Tied mats need regular trimming or they lift away from the hardscape.
Left floating, it also makes useful cover for fry. Stock rotates, so the listings here show what is available today. Sold for local pickup at the Lethbridge store.
Shrimp graze in it happily; browse Shrimp.
