South American Cichlid

South American cichlids cover a broad range, from small dwarf species through angelfish and discus to substantial predators such as oscars. Adult size and temperament vary enormously, so read up on the individual fish before adding it to a tank.

General conditions

Most come from soft, warm water and respond well to driftwood, leaf litter and a darker substrate. Good filtration matters, particularly for the larger species, which are heavy feeders.

Many are intelligent and interactive, and pairs turn territorial once they decide to spawn. Some suit a planted community; others are better as the centrepiece of a species tank.

Our list shows current availability and changes as new fish arrive. Livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store, and you are welcome to come and see them first.
