Mbuna

Mbuna are the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malawi. They are colourful, bold and constantly occupied, grazing algae from stone surfaces and defending small territories.

Water and layout

Hard, alkaline water suits them, as does a tank built around stacked rock with sand below and open lanes to swim. Strong filtration and regular water changes help, as they are messy feeders.

Most stay moderately sized but they are assertive by nature, so keep them in a dedicated Malawi setup, stock them densely enough to spread aggression around, and avoid mixing them with quiet community fish.

They suit keepers who want colour and activity and are content to manage a busy tank rather than a restful one.

Current stock is what is listed here, and it changes as new fish arrive. Livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store.
