Snail

Aquarium snails earn their place by grazing algae, biofilm and uneaten food. The group covers nerites, mystery snails, ramshorns and others, differing in size, shell shape and how quickly they multiply.

Points to consider

  • Nerites will not breed in fresh water, which keeps numbers predictable
  • Some species reproduce readily once food is plentiful
  • All of them need enough minerals in the water for healthy shell growth

Snails are peaceful, undemanding and suit almost any calm tank, though they should be kept clear of fish and loaches that treat them as food. Copper-based treatments are best avoided.
