Black sushi shrimp are a dark line of Neocaridina davidi, ranging from deep chocolate through to something close to true black. They stand out best over pale sand or against bright green plants, and the darker individuals hold their colour well once settled. Like all Neocaridina they are among the easier invertebrates to keep, which is why they are usually the first shrimp people try.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 3 cm.
  • Peaceful and harmless to plants.
  • Eats biofilm, soft algae and detritus; add a quality shrimp food and blanched vegetables a couple of times a week.
  • Wants moderately hard water with enough minerals for clean moulting.
  • Very sensitive to copper, and to sudden swings in temperature or water chemistry.
  • Breeds in fresh water without intervention once a group is settled.

They work well in a mature planted tank with small, gentle fish such as ember tetras, chili rasboras and otocinclus, or on their own where the colony can build. Expect adult fish of almost any size to eat shrimplets, so provide moss and leaf litter as cover. Cichlids, gouramis and larger barbs are not suitable tankmates.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the shrimp collection.
