Microsorum

Microsorum, better known as Java fern, is a rhizome plant that grows attached to hardscape instead of rooting into gravel. It is one of the most forgiving plants in the hobby.

Growing Java fern

  • Rhizome: tie or glue it to wood or rock and keep the rhizome above the substrate. Buried rhizomes rot.
  • Lighting: low light suits it. Growth is slow either way.
  • CO2: not needed.
  • Placement: midground or background, mounted on hardscape.
  • Difficulty: undemanding.

Mature leaves often form small plantlets along their edges, and those can be removed and attached elsewhere once they have roots of their own. Stock rotates, so this page shows what we hold today. Plants are sold for local pickup in Lethbridge.

Another hardy rhizome plant is Anubias.
