Male blue diamond guppies (Poecilia reticulata) carry a metallic blue that runs across most of the body and into a broad, flowing tail. The finnage is the whole point of a show guppy line, and it also shapes how the fish should be kept: a male dragging that much fin behind him is a weaker swimmer than a wild guppy, and he tires in strong current.
Aquarium care
- Males stay small, usually 3 to 4 cm in the body plus fins.
- Keep flow gentle โ heavy filtration output works long-finned guppies too hard.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water with stable temperature.
- Peaceful and lively, occupying the upper half of the tank.
- Feeds readily on flake, micro-pellets and small frozen foods.
- Not a fish for known fin-nippers such as tiger barbs or serpae tetras.
A male-only group works well if you would rather avoid fry; otherwise keep two or three females per male. Good tankmates include platies, corydoras, otocinclus and small peaceful rasboras. Never release aquarium fish into local waterways or garden ponds.
