Male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are what most people picture when they think of a colourful fish. Generations of selective breeding have produced enormous flowing tails and body patterns in every combination of red, blue, orange, green, black and metallic silver. Our assorted tanks are a mix by design, so what comes home depends on what came in on the last shipment. The wild fish, a small drab thing from Trinidad and northern South America, is barely recognisable in them now.
Aquarium care
- Males stay small, at roughly 3 to 4 cm including the tail.
- Peaceful and constantly active in the upper half of the tank.
- Prefers harder, alkaline water, which suits most Alberta tap water well.
- Omnivorous: quality flake, micro pellets, frozen daphnia and brine shrimp.
- Keep several together; a group looks better and spreads out any chasing.
An all-male tank is the usual reason to buy males on their own: you get the colour without the constant fry. They mix well with corydoras, small peaceful tetras and other livebearers. Keep them away from fin-nippers such as tiger barbs and Colombian tetras, which will make short work of those tails.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See what is in on our guppy page.
