Assorted Guppy (Female)

Female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are larger and heavier-bodied than the males, with shorter fins and quieter colouring, though modern breeding has put a good deal more pattern into them than the plain silver females of thirty years ago. Our assorted tanks bring in a mix of colours and tail shapes. They are calm, steady fish that spend their time cruising the upper half of the tank.

Aquarium care

• Larger than the males, reaching roughly 5 to 6 cm.
• Peaceful and easy to keep.
• Prefers harder, alkaline water.
• Omnivorous: quality flake, micro pellets, frozen daphnia and brine shrimp.
• A livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs.
• Keep two or three females per male if you keep both sexes.

Worth knowing: a female bought from a mixed tank is very likely already carrying, and can produce several broods from one mating. If you do not want fry, buy females only and expect one or two batches anyway. Dense planting or floating plants give the young somewhere to hide.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the current guppies.
