These are female super blue diamond guppies (Poecilia reticulata). The super blue diamond line is bred for a deep metallic blue that in males covers almost the entire fish; females carry a much softer version of it over a larger, deeper body with short fins. Female guppies are often overlooked, but they are the half of the species that determines whether a line continues.
Aquarium care
- Females reach roughly 5 to 6 cm, larger than the males.
- Hardy and undemanding provided the water is hard and alkaline.
- Peaceful, and active through the middle and upper levels of the tank.
- Feeds on flake, micro-pellets and small frozen foods.
- Livebearing, and capable of several broods from a single mating.
- Stock two or three females per male to spread out male attention.
They suit a calm hard-water community with platies, corydoras, small rasboras and other peaceful fish. Avoid fin-nippers and larger predatory tankmates. Guppies breed quickly, so have a plan for the fry, and never release aquarium fish into local waterways.
