These are female blue diamond guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Female guppies are the plainer half of the species — larger in the body, with a pale blue-silver sheen and much shorter fins than the males of the same line. They are bought to pair with males, to balance a tank where males are being harassed, or to keep a breeding line going, and they are every bit as hardy as their showier counterparts.
Aquarium care
- Females reach around 5 to 6 cm, noticeably larger than males.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water, which most tap water in this region provides.
- Peaceful and active in the middle and upper levels of the tank.
- Takes flake, micro-pellets and small frozen foods without fuss.
- Livebearing — a female can carry stored sperm and produce several broods from a single mating.
- Keep at least two or three females for every male so no one fish is constantly pursued.
They suit a peaceful hard-water community with platies, corydoras, small rasboras and other calm fish. Avoid fin-nippers and anything large enough to eat them. Livebearers multiply quickly, so plan for the numbers, and never release aquarium fish into local waterways or ponds.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the guppy collection.
