The red lyretail swordtail is a selectively bred form of Xiphophorus hellerii, a Central American livebearer. Ordinary swordtail males carry a single extended lower tail ray; in the lyretail form both the upper and lower rays are drawn out, giving a symmetrical trailing tail. Colour here is a solid warm red that holds well under most aquarium lighting. They are strong, energetic swimmers that use the whole length of a tank.
Aquarium care
- Females grow larger in the body, commonly to 10 cm or more; males are slimmer with the extended tail rays.
- Needs a tank with real swimming length rather than height.
- An accomplished jumper โ keep the aquarium covered.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water and good oxygenation.
- Males can be pushy with each other, so either keep one male or enough space for several.
- Omnivorous, and readily takes flake, pellets and frozen foods.
They suit a spacious hard-water community with platies, mollies, peaceful barbs and corydoras. Avoid fin-nippers, which will target the trailing rays. Never release aquarium livebearers into local waterways or ponds.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the swordtail collection.
