The koi tancho swordtail is a Xiphophorus hellerii colour form borrowed from koi terminology: a clean white body with a single red patch on the head, the same arrangement that gives tancho koi their name. Markings vary between individuals, and the size and shape of the red cap is part of what makes each fish worth picking out in person. Underneath the colour it is a standard swordtail โ hardy, active and long-lived when kept properly.
Aquarium care
- Adults commonly reach 10 cm or more, with males carrying the extended lower tail ray.
- Needs a long aquarium with open swimming space.
- Keep the tank covered; swordtails jump.
- Does best in hard, alkaline water with good oxygenation.
- Peaceful with other species, though males can be rough with one another.
- Omnivorous and easy to feed on flake, pellets and frozen foods.
Suits a hard-water community with platies, mollies, peaceful barbs, corydoras and larger rasboras. Stock more females than males, and expect fry in a mixed group. Never release aquarium livebearers into local waterways or garden ponds.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the swordtail collection.
