The koi tancho black tail swordtail takes the white body and red head patch of the tancho form and adds a dark tail, giving a three-part colour break along the fish. It is a selectively bred line of Xiphophorus hellerii, and as with all koi-patterned livebearers the markings differ from fish to fish, so it is worth choosing individuals in person if pattern matters to you.
Aquarium care
- Adults commonly reach 10 cm or more in the body.
- Wants a long tank with plenty of horizontal swimming room.
- A strong jumper — a well-fitted lid is essential.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water with steady temperature and decent flow.
- Peaceful toward other species; males spar among themselves.
- Livebearing, so young appear regularly in a mixed group.
They fit well into a hard-water community with platies, mollies, corydoras, peaceful barbs and larger rasboras. Keep two or three females per male, and avoid known fin-nippers. Aquarium fish must never be released into ponds or local waterways.
