The Santa Claus swordtail is a red and white form of Xiphophorus hellerii, named for the sharp division between a white body and bold red patches. Mature males carry the pointed lower tail extension that gives swordtails their name; females are plainer and heavier-bodied. Like all swordtails they are busy, purposeful fish that patrol from one end of the tank to the other rather than hanging in one spot.
Aquarium care
- Adults commonly reach 10 cm or more in the body, with the male's sword adding length.
- Wants a long tank with open swimming room.
- Jumps readily, so a secure cover is not optional.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water with steady temperature and good flow.
- Peaceful toward other species, though males spar with each other.
- Livebearing; fry appear regularly in a mixed group.
A good fit for a hard-water community with platies, mollies, corydoras and peaceful barbs. Keep several females per male, and give the tank enough length that a chased fish can actually get away. Never release aquarium fish into ponds or local waterways.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the swordtail collection.
