This is a blood red platy, a deep solid-red colour form of Xiphophorus maculatus. Platies are small Central American livebearers, and the red lines are among the most saturated colours available in a community fish — a group of them carries colour through a planted tank without needing special lighting to show it off. They are hardy, undemanding and constantly active in the middle of the tank.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 5 to 6 cm.
  • Suits a 60 L or larger community tank.
  • Wants hard, alkaline water and stable temperatures.
  • Peaceful with other species and easy to feed on flake, micro-pellets and frozen foods.
  • Swims mainly in the middle of the water column.
  • Livebearing — a mixed group will produce fry without any encouragement.

Good tankmates include mollies, swordtails, corydoras, peaceful barbs and larger rasboras. Keep more females than males so that no one female is constantly chased. Aquarium fish should never be released into ponds or local waterways.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the platy collection.
