Turquoise Blue Severum

Turquoise blue severum is a colour form of the South American severum (Heros sp.), a deep-bodied, disc-shaped cichlid with a calm and watchful manner. The turquoise strain trades the wild fish's dark barring for a wash of blue-green across the flanks, with fine iridescent markings over the face. Young fish look pale and plain, and colour builds as they grow.

Aquarium care

• Grows substantial. This needs a tall, wide tank rather than a starter aquarium.
• Warm, soft to moderately hard water with consistent water changes.
• Omnivorous: quality pellets, vegetable matter and frozen foods.
• Will eat soft aquarium plants, so use tough species such as anubias and java fern, or artificial decor.
• Driftwood, rockwork and open swimming space suit them well.
• Generally peaceful for its size, though a pair becomes territorial when spawning.

Good for a large South American setup with other calm, similarly sized fish, such as eartheaters, larger peaceful catfish and robust schooling characins. Anything small enough to fit in the mouth will eventually be treated as food.
