Gold Red Spotted Severum

The gold red spotted severum is a line of Heros efasciatus bred for a golden-yellow body carrying rows of red-brown spots across the flanks and face, heaviest on mature males. Like all severums it is a tall, disc-shaped cichlid with a small mouth and an unhurried way of moving, which makes it look considerably more peaceful than its size suggests. In practice it usually is, provided the tankmates are chosen sensibly.

Aquarium care

• A large, deep-bodied cichlid needing height as well as floor space.
• Calm and slow-moving; fast greedy tankmates will take its food.
• Prefers soft, warm water with driftwood and shaded areas.
• It grazes soft plants, so stick to anubias, java fern and similar.
• Pairs spawn on a cleaned flat surface and guard the site.
• Omnivorous with a vegetable component: cichlid pellets, frozen foods and greens.

Suits a large South American tank alongside geophagus, angelfish, larger tetras and peaceful catfish. Small tetras and shrimp will eventually be eaten.
