Salvinia auriculata is a free-floating aquatic fern with small paired oval leaves held above the water on a mat of fine, water-repellent hairs, and trailing root-like fronds beneath. It grows quickly in good light, needs no substrate and no planting, and is one of the easier floating plants to keep. Sold here in a 3.25oz portion.

Aquarium care

  • Floats freely. Do not plant it or weigh it down.
  • Wants a calm surface; strong flow and spray push the leaves under and rot them.
  • Leave a gap between the water and the cover glass so condensation does not sit on the leaves.
  • Grows fast in bright light and takes nutrients straight from the water column.
  • Shades the tank below, so thin the mat regularly if you are growing plants underneath.
  • The trailing fronds give cover for fry and shy fish at the surface.

Useful in shrimp tanks, fry tanks and blackwater setups, and anywhere you want to cut light or soften a bright tank. Fish that graze heavily on plants will make short work of it. Salvinia species are among the world's most damaging invasive aquatic weeds. Never release surplus plant, or the water it has been kept in, into ponds, creeks, irrigation channels or storm drains. Put trimmings in the household waste.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and live plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the live plants collection for what is in.
