Dwarf sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata) is a small grassy rosette plant from the Americas, listed here under the trade spelling "pussila". It sends runners out along the substrate and knits into a low green lawn of narrow, slightly strap-shaped blades. It is one of the more forgiving carpeting-style plants, which is why it turns up so often in first planted tanks.

Aquarium care

  • Rosette plant: bury the roots and leave the crown sitting at the substrate surface.
  • Spreads by runners, so new plantlets appear beside the parent and can be separated once rooted.
  • Grows shorter and denser under brighter light, and stretches taller in shade.
  • Responds well to root tabs in inert gravel or sand.
  • Does not need injected CO2, although it fills in faster with it.
  • Give it a few weeks before judging it, as early growth goes into roots.

A sensible foreground or midground choice for community tanks with tetras, rasboras, corydoras and small livebearers. Substrate-sifting cichlids and large goldfish will pull it up.

Stock rotates as new plants arrive, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the live plants collection for what is in.
