Ludwigia arcuata is a North American stem plant from the southeastern United States, and one of the finest-leaved plants in the genus. The leaves are narrow and needle-like, arranged in opposite pairs along a slender stem, and under good light and nutrients they take on a strong orange-red that makes it useful as a colour accent among green planting. In weaker light it stays olive-green and grows more loosely.

Aquarium care

  • A stem plant. Plant individual stems in the substrate, spaced so light reaches the lower leaves.
  • Needs strong light to colour up and stay compact.
  • Responds well to CO2 and regular liquid fertiliser, though it can be grown without CO2 at a slower rate.
  • Propagate by cutting the top off a stem and replanting it; the base will branch.
  • Needs regular trimming or it grows leggy and shades itself out.

Best in a mid-ground or background group in a well-lit planted tank, where a stand of red reads against green plants. It is not a good match for a low-light tank, where it tends to thin out.

Stock rotates as new plants arrive, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current live plants.
