Limnophila Sessiliflora

Limnophila sessiliflora is a fast-growing stem plant with whorls of fine, feathery leaves arranged up the stem, giving a soft texture that contrasts well against broad-leaved plants and hardscape. It is genuinely easy to grow, which is both its main appeal and the thing to plan for: in a well-lit tank it will reach the surface and keep going.

Growing it in your tank

• Plant stems individually in the substrate, spaced apart so light reaches the lower leaves.
• Grows quickly under moderate to strong light and takes up nutrients as it does.
• Trim regularly — cuttings can simply be replanted to thicken the stand.
• Undemanding about water chemistry, and does not require carbon dioxide injection.
• Lower leaves drop if the stems are left to shade each other.
• Useful in a new tank for competing with algae while things settle.

It suits community and nursery tanks, and the fine foliage gives fry and shrimplets somewhere to hide. Large cichlids and goldfish will make short work of it. This species is invasive where it has escaped into warm waterways, so never release it or dispose of it outdoors — put trimmings in the household waste.
