Java Moss

Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is the moss most aquarists meet first, and for good reason: it grows attached to almost anything, tolerates conditions that kill more demanding plants, and asks for nothing in particular. The growth is a loose tangle of fine branching stems with small overlapping leaves, mid to dark green, which thickens into a dense mat once it has taken hold on a surface.

Aquarium care

• Grows attached to wood, rock or mesh. It has no true roots, so it is tied or glued in place, not planted.
• Handles low light and needs no CO2.
• Slow to moderate growth, faster with more light and nutrients.
• Trim it back with scissors to keep the shape; the trimmings can be reattached elsewhere.
• Traps detritus, so a gentle squeeze in old tank water during maintenance keeps it clean.

A staple for shrimp tanks, fry grow-out tanks and any aquascape needing a soft green surface over hardscape. It is also a reliable choice for a first planted tank, since it survives most beginner mistakes.
