Brazilian pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala) is a versatile South American plant with round, bright green leaves on long stems. It is one of the few aquarium plants that works equally well planted in the substrate, floated at the surface, or trailed along the back of the tank, and it grows fast enough to be genuinely useful for soaking up excess nutrients.
Growing it in your tank
- Plant it, float it, or wedge stems behind hardscape — all three work.
- Grows quickly under moderate light, and faster still when floating with access to air.
- Undemanding about water chemistry and does not need carbon dioxide injection.
- Trim and replant cuttings to keep the stand full.
- Floating growth shades the tank, which suits fish that dislike bright light.
- Roots trailing from floating stems give shrimplets and fry cover.
It suits community tanks, shrimp tanks and breeding setups, and it is a good choice for anyone wanting fast plant growth without a high-tech setup. Goldfish and large cichlids will eat it. Dispose of trimmings in the household waste rather than outdoors.
