Echinodorus Species

This is an assorted listing of Echinodorus, the group commonly sold as Amazon swords. What arrives depends on the delivery, and the genus covers everything from compact plants that stay under 20 cm to large rosettes that will fill the back corner of a big tank. Because size varies so much, ask our staff which species has come in before you plan where it is going.

Growing it in your tank

• All Echinodorus are rooted plants that feed heavily through the roots.
• Use root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate; liquid fertiliser alone usually is not enough.
• Plant with the crown above the substrate and the roots buried.
• Grows well in moderate light and does not require carbon dioxide injection.
• Adult size varies enormously between species, so confirm what you are buying.
• Remove old leaves at the base as new growth comes through.

Swords suit community tanks, angelfish tanks and South American setups where a solid background or centrepiece plant is wanted. They are eaten or uprooted by goldfish and larger cichlids. Please dispose of surplus plant material in the household waste rather than outdoors.
