Echinodorus bleheri ‘XL’

The Amazon sword (Echinodorus bleheri) is the classic large rosette plant of the freshwater hobby, with broad, ribbed, bright green leaves rising from a central crown. This listing covers XL specimens, so these are grown-on plants meant to fill a space immediately rather than take a season to get there.

Aquarium care

• Rosette plant: bury the roots and keep the crown clear of the substrate.
• A strong root feeder. Root tabs or a nutritive substrate make a visible difference, and water column dosing alone is not enough.
• Needs depth of substrate for the root mass and a tank tall enough for full-length leaves.
• Tolerates moderate light and does not require CO2.
• Propagates by producing plantlets on long flower stalks, which can be separated once they have their own roots.
• Remove old outer leaves at the base as they yellow.

A natural centrepiece for larger community tanks with angelfish, discus, larger tetras, rainbowfish or peaceful South American cichlids. It is a poor match for goldfish and for serious substrate diggers.
