Dwarf papyrus (Cyperus haspan) is a small sedge with slender triangular stems topped by a starburst of fine green bracts. It is a striking plant, but it is a marsh and bog species rather than a true aquatic, and being straightforward about that matters: it is grown emersed or partly emersed, with the roots wet and the stems and crowns in air.

Aquarium care

  • Not a long-term submerged aquarium plant. Held fully underwater it declines and eventually rots, however good the lighting is.
  • Best used in paludariums, ripariums, bog filters and open-topped tanks where it can grow up out of the water.
  • Plant the roots in saturated soil, gravel or an aquatic planter basket, with the crown at or just above the waterline.
  • Wants bright light. A well-lit window position or strong lighting above the water line suits it.
  • Propagates by division of the clump, and the flower heads will root if bent down into wet substrate.
  • Feeds through its roots, so a planted substrate or root tabs serve it better than water column dosing.

This is a plant for paludarium and riparium builders, and for turtle setups with a planted margin.
