Cryptocoryne wendtii is a Sri Lankan rooted plant and one of the most reliable mid-ground species in the hobby. The broad leaf form has wider, shorter leaves than the standard variety, in shades running from olive-green to bronze and reddish-brown depending on light and nutrients, with a slightly puckered surface. It grows as a rosette from the substrate and spreads into a clump by sending out runners.
Aquarium care
- Plant the roots in the substrate, leaving the crown where the leaves meet the roots above it.
- Grows in low to moderate light and needs no CO2.
- Feeds mainly through the roots, so root tabs or a nutrient substrate help.
- Expect crypt melt: leaves may die back after planting or after a big change. The roots survive and new leaves follow, so leave it alone.
- Spreads slowly by runners into a dense clump.
- Dislikes being moved once established.
A dependable mid-ground plant for low-tech and community tanks, and a good partner to anubias and java fern on hardscape behind it.
