Cryptocoryne ciliata is one of the largest cryptocorynes kept in aquariums, with long, upright, softly toothed leaves that make it a background plant rather than a midground filler. In the wild it grows along tidal river margins, and it is unusual among crypts in tolerating brackish conditions as well as fresh water.

Growing it in your tank

  • A large crypt — give it room at the back of the tank rather than treating it as a midground plant.
  • Plant the roots in substrate and use root tabs; crypts feed largely through their roots.
  • Grows in low to moderate light and does not need carbon dioxide injection.
  • Like all cryptocorynes, it may melt back after planting or after a change in conditions. Leave the roots undisturbed and new leaves usually follow.
  • Slow growing, so it needs patience rather than trimming.
  • Dislikes being moved once settled.

It suits community tanks, low-tech planted setups and blackwater-style aquariums with peaceful fish. Goldfish and large cichlids will damage it. Please put surplus plant material in the household waste rather than disposing of it outdoors.

Stock rotates with each delivery, and live plants are available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the live plant collection.
