Anubias nana (Anubias barteri var. nana) is a compact West African rhizome plant with thick, dark, leathery leaves on short stalks. The listing spells the name "Anubis", but the plant is the familiar dwarf Anubias. It grows slowly, holds its shape for years, and is close to indestructible once it has attached itself to something.

Aquarium care

  • Never bury the rhizome. The thick horizontal stem has to sit above the substrate, because buried rhizomes rot and the plant is lost.
  • Tie or glue it to driftwood, stone or a decoration and let the roots grip on their own.
  • Happy in low light. Strong light mainly encourages algae on the slow-growing leaves.
  • Feeds from the water column, so root tabs do little for it.
  • Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections, each keeping several leaves and roots.
  • No CO2 required.

A dependable plant for low-tech tanks, shaded corners, betta tanks and shrimp setups, and tough enough to sit in tanks where softer plants get shredded. It looks at home tied into a driftwood layout with small schooling fish above it.

Stock rotates, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the live plants collection.
