Anubias nana is a compact form of Anubias barteri, a West African plant that grows along stream banks and over submerged rock and wood. The leaves are thick, dark green, oval and distinctly leathery, held on short stalks from a horizontal creeping stem called a rhizome. It is one of the toughest aquarium plants available, and the leaves are hard enough that most plant-eating fish leave them alone.

Aquarium care

  • Attach the rhizome to wood or rock with thread or glue. Do not bury it, or it will rot.
  • Grows in low light and needs no CO2.
  • Very slow growing, which is part of the appeal in a low-maintenance tank.
  • Prefers shade; strong light over slow growth encourages algae on the leaves.
  • Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections, each with several leaves.

Ideal for low-tech tanks, shrimp tanks and setups with fish that dig or graze, since nothing is planted in the substrate for them to disturb. It works particularly well tied low on driftwood where the leaves catch the light.

Stock rotates as new plants arrive, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current live plants.
