Congensis (sold as Anubias congensis, and generally treated by botanists as a form of Anubias heterophylla) is the tall, narrow-leaved member of the genus that most shops carry. The leaves are long ovals held on upright stalks, and an established plant stands well above the familiar nana forms, which makes it a background plant rather than something to perch on top of a rock. Its home range is West and Central Africa, along shaded stream margins that flood and drain with the seasons.
Aquarium care
- Attach the rhizome to wood or stone, or rest it on top of the substrate. Covering it causes rot.
- Roots may be tucked into gravel or sand. Only the rhizome needs to stay exposed.
- Expect a new leaf every few weeks at most. Slow is normal here, not a symptom.
- Shade is tolerated well. Bright light without added carbon dioxide usually just encourages surface algae.
- Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections, each keeping several leaves.
Worth considering for deeper tanks and for anyone whose fish demolish soft-stemmed plants. It holds up in cichlid tanks and larger community setups where Ludwigia or Hygrophila would be stripped.
