Anubias barteri "broad leaf" is a larger-leaved form of the West African rhizome plant Anubias barteri, carrying wide, thick, dark green blades on sturdy stalks. Where the dwarf forms make ground cover across a piece of wood, this one is big enough to stand as a specimen plant, and it holds each leaf for a very long time before replacing it.
Aquarium care
- Do not bury the rhizome. The thick creeping stem must stay above the substrate, because buried it rots and the plant is lost.
- Attach it to driftwood or rock with thread or gel glue, or wedge it into hardscape and let the roots take hold.
- Low light suits it. Under bright light the slow-growing leaves collect algae.
- Takes its nutrients from the water column rather than through the roots.
- Divide by cutting the rhizome, keeping several leaves on each piece.
- Wipe or gently brush algae off the leathery leaves rather than scrubbing them.
A good choice for low-tech tanks, larger community aquariums and setups holding fish that are hard on delicate plants. It works particularly well as a shaded anchor plant in a driftwood layout.
