Anubias barteri is the full-sized form of the West African anubias, with broad, thick, deep green leaves on stalks rising from a creeping horizontal rhizome. Where nana stays low and compact, barteri builds into a substantial plant with leaves large enough to work as a mid-ground or background feature. The leaf surface is stiff and leathery, which is why it survives in tanks where softer plants get eaten or shredded.

Aquarium care

  • Tie or glue the rhizome to wood or rock. Burying the rhizome causes it to rot.
  • Grows in low light and needs no CO2.
  • Slow growing, so it needs very little trimming.
  • Shade suits it; bright light over slow growth invites algae on the leaves.
  • Divide the rhizome to propagate, leaving several leaves on each piece.

A good choice for low-tech tanks, cichlid tanks and any setup where fish disturb the substrate. Because nothing is rooted in the gravel, diggers cannot uproot it.

Stock rotates as new plants arrive, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current live plants.
